MSP'S GREEN ADVICE-
What to do with your old paint:
Do not put it down the drain, storm sewer or in your trash if it is still wet.
This will only contaminate our groundwater. Old paint is something
everyone has and does not know what to do with.

Here are a few tips on how to dispose of it properly:
1- You can donate cans of ½ gallon or more of latex paint to local non profits, such as Habitat for Humanity.
Oil will be accepted only if unopened. You may even ask for a tax deduction.
2- Dried out or hardened paint may be thrown out in the trash. If you have less than a ½ can you can dry it
out by putting some kitty litter in it and leave the lid off for a few days. Then you may put the can in your trash.
3- Check your Township for the local Hazardous Waste Facility.
4- Check local paint stores- they are a great source of information .
If you have enough to use, and color is not an issue, mix together old latex with latex , or oil with oil. Use this new color to paint your garden shed , workshop or garage, kids’ playhouse or even the dog house! If you have old exterior stain, use it to maintain the underside of your deck. This needs to be taken care of as much as the topside as it is exposed to the elements too. |
